Said to have begun as a prayer for protection from fire after the 1657 "Furisode" fire in Edo, which led to this day being designated a day of misfortune, the festival has been handed down since the Edo period and was designated an Iwate Prefecture Intangible Folk Cultural Property in 2017 (Heisei 29). Men in their unlucky years run bare-chested through the town while onlookers wait with buckets of water, dousing them while praying for good health and the fulfillment of wishes.
